About me
Profile Picture
I'm currently the Director of Engineering in the UK for the Geo Technologies group at Yahoo!

I first started hacking on a Commodore PET, built my own Sinclair ZX-80, spent too many years behind the console of a VAX, started off coding in Assembler and FORTRAN before ending up in C++ via C and have over 20 years experience of managing and engineering large-scale software projects, predominantly in a UNIX environment, in a wide range of industry sectors.

Prior to taking up my role at Yahoo!, I've worked within the geo domain for companies such as Digicon, developing geophysical technologies to aid in the search for natural resources and the European Space Agency Research Institute in Rome, Italy, participating in the development and launch of ERS-1, Europe's first remote sensing satellite. Outside of the geo field, I've worked for companies including the BBC World Service, Reuters, Factiva.com and Network Associates.

I've spoken and presented at a wide range of events including #geomob, the British Computer Society, State of the Map, Where 2.0 and several location themed mashup* events.

I blog and tweet on matters geo for Yahoo! at www.ygeoblog.com and as @yahoogeo, personally at www.vicchi.org and as @vicchi. I live with my family in Teddington, South West London.
